A short history of Cadillac
Cadillac was founded in Detroit in 1902 under the engineer Henry Leland and named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded the city in 1701. It became part of General Motors in 1909 and built its reputation on precision engineering, introducing a mass-produced V8 in 1915 and a V16 in 1930.
- 1948: the first Cadillac tailfins, inspired by the Lockheed P-38 fighter aircraft.
- 1950s: Series 62, Coupe de Ville, Sixty Special and the Eldorado (from 1953) defined American luxury; the 1959 models carried the tallest fins of all.
- 1967: the front-wheel-drive Eldorado; from 1970 it used a 500 cubic-inch (8.2-litre) V8, one of the largest engines ever fitted to a production car.
- 1976: the Eldorado convertible was marketed as the last American convertible, and it became an instant collectable.
- Since 1999: the Escalade became Cadillac's best-known model, followed in the electric era by the Lyriq.
What to check on a classic Cadillac
Classic Cadillacs were loaded with equipment for their time: power windows and seats, automatic headlight dimmers, air conditioning and vacuum-operated features. Check that everything works, because restoring these systems takes time even when parts are available.
Body rust tends to start in the rocker panels, floors, trunk floor and the lower rear quarters. Also think about size: 1950s and 1970s Cadillacs are very long cars, so measure your garage before you fall in love.
Importing a Cadillac from the USA
Almost every classic Cadillac was sold new in North America, which makes the United States the natural place to buy one. The delivered price covers the car, US inland transport, ocean freight to your destination port and our service.
Customs duties, import VAT or taxes, port charges at destination, registration and local compliance costs are paid separately. Classic Cadillacs over 30 years old often qualify for reduced duty or VAT, while modern models may need individual approval work in some countries. Shipping times are estimates that depend on the port, shipping line, customs and destination country.
Frequently asked questions
Which classic Cadillac models are most sought after?
The late-1950s cars, especially the 1959 Eldorado Biarritz and Series 62 convertibles, along with the 1957–1958 Eldorado Brougham and early-1950s Eldorados. The 1970s Eldorado convertibles are a more affordable way into the marque.
Is a big classic Cadillac practical outside the USA?
Many owners in Europe and elsewhere drive them regularly. They are comfortable and mechanically robust, but check their size against your garage and local roads, and budget for fuel.
What does the delivered price include?
The car, transport inside the USA, ocean freight to your destination port and our service. Customs duties, import VAT or taxes, destination port charges, registration and local compliance costs are not included.
Can you inspect a Cadillac before I buy?
Yes. We can arrange a detailed video inspection, including the operation of power accessories, and share all photos and documents available for the car.
How long will delivery take?
Shipping times are estimates, not guaranteed dates: they depend on the car's location, the port, the shipping line, customs and your destination country. Your adviser gives you an estimated timeline after you reserve.
