Mustang generations at a glance

Ford unveiled the Mustang on 17 April 1964 at the New York World's Fair. The earliest cars are often called "1964½" models but are titled as 1965s. Few American cars have been built in so many forms, so it helps to know where each generation sits.

  • First generation (1964½–1973): coupe, convertible and, from late 1964, the 2+2 fastback. The body grew for 1967 to take big-block V8s; Shelby GT350 (1965) and GT500 (1967), Mach 1 (1969) and Boss 302 / Boss 429 (1969–1970) are the headline versions.
  • Mustang II (1974–1978): smaller and more economical, a product of its time.
  • Fox-body (1979–1993): light, simple and easy to modify; the 5.0 V8 cars have a strong following.
  • SN95 (1994–2004) and S197 (2005–2014): the S197 brought back retro styling inspired by the late-1960s cars.
  • S550 (2015–2023): the first Mustang designed for global sale, with independent rear suspension and a right-hand-drive version. S650 followed for 2024.

How to buy a classic Mustang with confidence

On 1965–1973 cars, the fifth character of the VIN is the original engine code, and the door data plate records body style, colour, trim, build date and axle. Comparing them with the car in front of you is the first check against clones and wrongly described cars. For 1967 and later Mustangs, a Marti Report reproduces the factory production record.

Rust is the main enemy of early Mustangs. Look at the floor pans, torque boxes, rear quarters and trunk floor, and at the cowl, where leaking vents can rot the structure below the windscreen. The shock towers and front frame rails show whether the car has had a hard life or an accident.

Shelby and other high-value versions deserve documentation and an expert opinion before any money changes hands. We can organise a video inspection and share every document available for the car.

Shipping a Mustang to your country

The US market has more Mustangs, in more specifications, than anywhere else, and left-hand drive suits most of Europe and many other markets. The delivered price covers the car, US inland transport, ocean freight to your destination port and our service.

Not included: customs duties, import VAT or taxes, port charges at destination, registration and any local compliance costs. Classic Mustangs over 30 years old often qualify for reduced duty or VAT as historic vehicles; modern US-specification cars may need individual approval work such as lighting changes. Shipping times are estimates and depend on the port, shipping line, customs and destination country.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 1964½ and a 1965 Mustang?

Cars built from the launch in spring 1964 until the 1965 model year officially began are known as 1964½ Mustangs, but they are titled as 1965 models. They differ in details such as the generator (instead of an alternator) and some trim items.

How do I know if a Mustang is original or a clone?

Start with the VIN, whose fifth character is the original engine code on 1965–1973 cars, and the door data plate. For 1967 and later cars a Marti Report confirms the factory build. High-value versions such as Shelbys should also be checked against registry records.

Does the delivered price include import duty?

No. It covers everything on the US side up to your destination port: the car, inland transport, ocean freight and our service. Customs duties, import VAT or taxes, destination port charges, registration and local compliance costs are paid separately.

Can I import a modern Mustang to Europe?

Yes. Ford has sold the Mustang in Europe since the 2015 model year, but a US-specification car usually still needs individual approval work, for example on lighting. Requirements vary by country, so check our country pages or ask your adviser.

Can you inspect the car before I buy?

Yes. We can arrange a detailed video inspection and send you the photos, documents and history available for the car before you decide.
